Jacob’s ladder furrows
And I burrow in the earth.
But all the aquifers of August
Must’ve dried into the dirt,
When my companion comes, unbidden.
Hmmm…
Tossing currency inside
My well, like a wisher
‘Til the water table rises,
Flushing out the fissures
Where I keep my secrets hidden.
Hmmm…
‘Cause I cannot staunch
The river of my need,
So do your worst.
And I cannot tell
The difference between
The drowning and the thirst.
Through the grappling of the tide,
His gaze attaches like a tether.
But in those enigmatic eyes,
There be all my sins remembered.
So I am saved, and all unsettled.
Hmmm…
Everything can be explained,
There is not mystery in the planet.
Jacob’s ladder’s just a wave
In the aurora borealis.
No intelligent design,
No fortune-telling horoscope.
We are no different, you and I:
You know nothing I don’t know.
Now call me by my proper name,
Or I’ll never let you go.
Move me, prove me wrong.
Let’s wrestle.
‘Cause I cannot staunch
The river of my need,
So do your worst.
And I cannot tell
The difference between
The drowning and the thirst.
Jacob’s ladder furrows
And I burrow in the earth.
Hmmm…
