GOWER
Where was I... Oh:
Pericles arrived at Tyre,
Settled in to his own desire.
Thaisa we leave at Ephesus,
Unto Diana now a Votaress.
THAISA / CERIMON
I life would wish, that I might
Waste it for you, like candlelight.
GOWER
Now to Maina bend your mind,
Whom our fast growing scene must find
Raised in Tarsus, if you’re keeping track.
Oh, by the way: welcome back
GHOSTS
Marina! Marina!
GOWER
Marina, by Cleon trained
In music and letter, she hath gained
An education in every grace
Which makes her the wonder of this place
GHOSTS
Marina! Marina!
GOWER
But alack, that green-eyed monster
Of the wrack of earned praise,
Sharpens it's knife,
Seeks to shorten Marina’s days
Yet Marina is ne’er alone
Dionyza has a daughter of her own:
Philoten, and ‘tis certain she
Will ever and ever with Marina be
GHOSTS
Marina! Marina!
DIONYZA
And Philoten.
And Philoten!
GOWER
O, Marina, the corn is growing
O, Marina, the breeze is blowing
O, Marina, the night is falling
O, Marina, the sea is calling
But alack, in all ways Philoten contends
Yet Marina gets
Rapturous praise
While poor Philoten’s mother frets
Thinking that this custom darkens
Philoten’s graveful marks,
Dionyza, with envy rare,
Present murder does prepare
For good Marina, that her daughter
Might stand peerless by her slaughter.
Soon as her vile thoughts do stead,
Lychorida, our nurse, is dead,
And cursed Dionyza hath
This pregnant instrument of wrath
Pressed for the blow.
1, 2, 3, 4
But this yet unborn event
I do commend to your content.
Only I carry winged time
Post on the feet of my rhyme
GHOSTS
Marina! Marina!
GOWER
Dionyza does appear
And leonine, a murderer
Now draws near
